The US Army is pilot testing chemical hydrolysis as a method for destroying the chemical agents stockpiled at Aberdeen, Maryland, and Newport, Indiana. This title focuses on the overarching issues in the process designs integrating individual processing steps, including potential alternative configurations and process safety and reliability.

One day in March 1987, a barge from Islip, Long Island was evicted from Morehead City, North Carolina, after trying to unload the mountains of trash on its decks. More than five months from the time it began its trip, the unwelcome barge, and it's 3,186 tons of commercial garbage, became the cornerstone of an astonishing news investigation that revealed a country unable to cope with its mounting garbage crisis.Newsday reporters were the first to locate the barge, the Mobro 4000 as it drifted aimlessly off the shore of Long Island. They were also first to explore and explain the problems and issues that barge had come to symbolize. The results of their investigation are presented in this book. Winner of the Worth Bingham Award, the Page One Award for Crusading Journalism, and the New York State Associated Press Award for In-Depth Reporting, Rush to Burn explains the reasons why we, as a throw-away society, are suffocating in our own trash. It also explains why communities, in desperation, are turning to incineration, the riskiest form of garbage disposal yet developed.

This volume presents the first result of archaeolagical work carried out during the construction of the A5 and the Al 60 Melun- Troyes motorways. Three protohistoric burialgrounds, situated between Montereau and Sens, form the subject of a publication following several lines; as well as a comparative study of the structures and small finds there is usefid information about the funeral rites and the methods of inhumation. These are the combined results of a complementary approach between archaeologists, anthropologists and pollen specialists. The presentation of these sites is followed by a study of the population of Burgundy from the late Bronze age to the Iron âge.

Cremation, as a means of managing the post-mortem body, was reintroduced to Europe at the end of the eighteenth century, but would not become common practice until the second half of the nineteenth century. This was a major development, with multifaceted implications which generated heated debate. Initially, armed with a variety of arguments (hygienic, economic, aesthetic, and philosophical arguments citing freedom of conscience and will) the advocates of modern cremation - who tended to come...

This Third Edition of Glassman's classic text clearly defines the role of chemistry, physics, and fluid mechanics as applied to the complex topic of combustion. Glassman's insightful introductory text emphasizes underlying physical and chemical principles, and encompasses engine technology, fire safety, materials synthesis, detonation phenomena, hydrocarbon fuel oxidation mechanisms, and environmental considerations. Combustion has been rewritten to integrate the text, figures, and appendixes, detailing available combustion codes, making it not only an excellent introductory text but al

This book provides an extensive review of research data and encourages the uptake of recycled secondary materials (RSM) by the construction industry, through discussions of the global use of virgin aggregates and CO2 polluter Portland cement; reduction of usage through the appropriate use of waste materials, thereby conserving natural resources; reduction of energy and CO2 emissions; and change through engineering ingenuity and new concepts in design.
